Carlos Elías Barraza Trevino, tenor
Biography
Carlos Elias Barraza Treviño, a tenor from Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico, holds a bachelor’s degree in music education (voice emphasis) from the University of Texas at El Paso. He earned a master’s degree in Voice Performance & Pedagogy in May of 2023 from Arizona State University and is currently in his final year of his doctoral degree (DMA) in Vocal Performance at Arizona State University.
Carlos excels in art song, particularly in German and Spanish, and has received several awards, distinctions, and vocal scholarships. He has performed as a guest soloist for the Mount Desert Summer Chorale in Bar Harbor, Maine, the ASU Concert Choir, Arizona Masterworks Chorale, and several other professional choirs in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
His larger opera roles include Tonio from La fille du regiment, Tom Rakewell from The Rake’s Progress, and Orfeo from Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo. Beyond performing, he teaches voice, piano, and guitar in Phoenix and is dedicated to elevating vocal artistry and education through performance and pedagogy.
Teaching Experience
Carlos taught at Arizona State University as a graduate teaching assistant from 2022 to 2025. During that time, he gave voice lessons to undergraduates and music minors as well as having taught several courses including:
MUS 146: Singing for Non-Majors
MUP 133: Class Voice (for music majors)
MUP 134: Class Voice II (for music majors)
In the Fall of 2025, Carlos became a Faculty Associate at ASU, teaching the online course MUS 232: Laughing to Music. Carlos has been TeXes Music Certified in Music EC-12, PPR EC-12 in the state of Texas and has also been teaching private lessons in voice, piano, and guitar since 2019.
